Of all the precious commodities that sustain
life, the most important must surely is water
because it is an important ingredient that
satisfies most vital human needs. Yet, as much
as water perceived to be life saver, we must not
underestimate its role as a life taker that can
cause various water born diseases.
Contaminated water is one of the
major causes of diseases and low life expectancy
in practically all societies world wide. Water
can contain an incredibly large variety of
organisms, some of which are harmless, many
however, are disease causing. These
micro-organisms must be destroyed before water
is put in for use. Boiling or filtering of water
does not completely destroy such organisms.
It is therefore very important
to disinfect water that it is clean, pure and
completely free from harmful micro organisms.
Chlorination and other chemical
disinfection techniques, once assumed to be safe
and harmless, are known to have long term
damaging effects on human body & environment.
With increased awareness of the necessity for a
sustainable ecological future, people around the
world are focusing more closely on environmental
issues. Most of the previously accepted methods
of disinfection, using organic compounds that
are not neutralized during disinfection.
