Sun rays is the natural source of Ultraviolet. UV has the germicidal capability and is known for its disinfectant effects.

The main sources of UV are:-
(1) Natural - direct from sun.
(2) Artificial - they comprise of a variety of arc and incandescent lamps.

UV Disinfection generally employs low pressure mercury lamps. It generates short waves of UV in the region of 253.7 nm, which is lethal to micro-organisms, including bacteria & Virus. Total Organic Carbon (TOC) in water can also be reduced from water with 185 nm wave length Ultraviolet. Therefore, UV is effective for waste water treatment also.

The advantages of Chlorination in UV System compared to Hitech is tabulated below :-

Excessive use of chlorine (more than 2 to 5 ppm residuals) requires further de-chlorination. It means extra cost and treatment. Also contaminates entering from carbon bed add further to the microbial problem, formation of organochlorine harmful by-products toxic, cancerous.
RELIABILITY:
No corrosion due to unique design, consistent output reliable.
Plant corrosion problem. Non-reliability due to use of bleaching powder, non-reliable, stability, and low-self life.
