Sun
rays is the natural source of Ultraviolet. UV has the
germicidal capability and is known for its disinfectant
effects.
The main sources of UV are:-
(1) Natural - direct from sun.
(2) Artificial - they comprise of a variety of arc and
incandescent lamps.
UV Disinfection generally employs low
pressure mercury lamps. It generates short waves of UV
in the region of 253.7 nm, which is lethal to
micro-organisms, including bacteria & Virus. Total
Organic Carbon (TOC) in water can also be reduced from
water with 185 nm wave length Ultraviolet. Therefore, UV
is effective for waste water treatment also.
